On Monday, May 17, 2010 the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Library System will meet at 3:00 p.m. at the MLS Chicago office located at 224 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60604. The meeting agenda can be found at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/board.

Voting for the FY2011 MLS Board is now open at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/board/index.asp. Voting will run from Thursday, May 6, 2010 through Friday, June 11, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. Election results will be reported to the MLS Board on Monday, June 21, 2010 and will be posted to the membership via the MLS website on Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Read the FY2011 Slate of Candidates article in this issue.

Nominations for the 2010 MLS Awards are open. The nine award catagories recognize MLS member libraries, trustees, MLS staff, and government officials for their contribution to libraries and/or the field of librarianship. Nominations will close on Friday, July 23, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. The awards will be presented at the MLS Annual Meeting on October 22, 2010. REGISTRATION IS OPEN for the MLS Summer School Institute. Taking place Friday, August 6, 8:30 – 3:30 at VJ Andrew High School in Tinley Park, IL. This year's theme is Practical, Realistic & Doable @ Your School Library. Keynote speaker Deb Logan and others will discuss topics that school librarians can implement to streamline their jobs and experience greater success. FY2011 Slate of Candidates

Continuing Education Events

Due to budget concerns and staff reductions, we lowered our facility’s heat during the winter months and will moderate the air conditioning this summer. Attendees at the Burr Ridge office are asked to dress accordingly, for their comfort. We have also eliminated snacks and coffee service at MLS workshops and meetings. Water will always be offered, and coffee or hot water for tea made available in our staff kitchen. Guests are also welcome to use our vending machines in the kitchen area.

MLS Academic Forum Recap

On April 9 MLS sponsored a forum for its academic member libraries. The purpose was to provide members an opportunity to network with local colleagues, discuss ways to create stronger collaborative relationships, share local expertise or knowledge, and suggest ways MLS could provide support for Chicago area academic libraries. Torey Malatia from the Chicago Public Radio served as the keynote speaker to “jumpstart” the discussion.

Member Spotlight: CLASS Childcare Provider Workshops

Last fall, several MLS libraries within the CLASS youth services networking group saw a need in their communities for continuing education workshops for child care providers. Due to state budget cuts, the number of these classes had been reduced. However, the yearly accreditation requirements were still very much in demand from their local child care providers. Read how these libraries fulfilled a growing community need and how your library can get involved.
