MLS Academic Forum: On Friday April 9, MLS will host a Forum for Academic Libraries at the Columbia College. The purpose is to offer opportunities to network with local colleagues and discuss issues such as collaboration and sharing resources/expert knowledge. On June 1 and 8, MLS is conducting two CE sessions on Public Speaking by Stephen Mongelluzzo. Registration is required by April 30th to avoid cancellation of the workshops. REGISTER NOW for Information Literacy Summit 2010 Problem Solving in our Communities: Everyday Information Experiences. Different dates/locations are available so participants can choose the one most convenient for them. The keynote presenter will be Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, coordinator for information literacy services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and associate professor for library administration. Lisa is also the current Vice-President/President-Elect of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). Summit registration is now open. Registration fee is $25 and includes materials, continental breakfast and lunch.
The Chicago Bulls are offering one night in March for Chicago Bulls Library Appreciation Night. Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. vs. New Jersey Nets at the United Center. The Bulls specially priced tickets are for all library staff, trustees, and their families and friends. Tickets normally priced at $70 (rows 1-7 of 300 level) and $46 (rows 8-17 of 300 level) are available for $35 and $23. This offer is extended to academic, public, school, and special libraries. MLS Board highlights
Highlights from the MLS Board Meeting held on February 8 include:
- 2010 Elections to the MLS Board of Directors is approaching and a Nominating Committee will be appointed by the March Baord meeting
- With the announced retirement of the MLS Executive Director, a committee is being formed to explore all possibilites regarding the furture structure of the MLS organization. The committee will be chaired by Marilyn Boria, MLS Board member and Director of the Elmhurst Public Library.

The Impact of the Small Public Library Management Institute
Jim Deiters from the Blue Island Public Library talks about his experience at the 2009 Small Public Library Management Institute (SPLMI). Created by the Illinois State Library and Western Illinois University in 1994 to help directors from small libraries gain knowledge and skills to help administer their library. Still going strong it has had a great impact on Illinois libraries. [Permalink]

Grants and Awards
Susan Kraybill Roberts Scholarship. Susan's sister Anne has set up a scholarship in her name. Managed through a Foundation in West Virginia, it is designed so that residents/staff of the counties represented by MLS are eligible. A $1,000 scholarship, the application process is totally online through Our Community's Foundation at http://www.pacfwv.com.
Is there someone you feel has made an outstanding contribution to Illinois Libraries? If so, the Illinois Library Association's Awards nominations are now open. Recipients are selected by the ILA Awards Committee or by the various awards subcommittees. This year's nomination deadline is May 15, 2010. Details about each award and nomination forms can be found at http://www.ila.org/membership/awards.htm.
Pepsi Refresh Project is an online grant program which makes available dollars to projects intended to improve communities through an online, democratic voting process. Library Law: First Amendement Issues - Part II
In this portion of our First Amendment series, we address meeting room and bulletin board policies. Depending upon the policies created for their use, meeting rooms and bulletin boards in libraries can be characterized as traditional public fora, designated or limited fora or nonpublic fora. A library should create carefully drafted, attorney-reviewed policies regarding meeting room and bulletin board use from the very beginning. A library must then consistently and objectively enforce these use policies or risk a claim or suit alleging an abrogation of an individual’s constitutional rights to free speech and freedom of expression under the First Amendment. Member Spotlight: Thornton Public Library joins SWAN
