On Monday, November 16, the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Library System, and the Board of LIMRiCC will meet. The LIMRiCC meeting will convene at 5:30 p.m., the MLS Board meeting immediately following. Meeting agendas can be found at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/board. Both meetings will be held at the MLS Burr Ridge office located at 125 Tower Dr. Burr Ridge, Illinois.
The Public Library Certification Page is now available on the MLS website at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/members/PLMembershipCertificationForm.pdf. This certification, requiring board signature, is a requirement of system membership. Public library members must submit this form to MLS no later than December 31st, 2009.
MLS launches two School Networking Groups for MLS School Library members. These meetings will provide an informal opportunity to meet other school librarians, share what’s happening in your school library, ask questions, or seek out advice. Register for the group within your zone or either meeting. Only open for MLS members so you must be logged into your L2 account to see the event. Northern Zones 1-5, Tuesday, November 17, 2009, 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., Immaculate Conception High School, and Southern Zones 6-9, Friday, November 20, 2009, 2:15 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Homewood-Flossmoor High School
Reciprocal Borrowing Agreements have been released by MLS for public library members wishing to have continued access to the Reciprocal Borrowing credit/debit and collection agency service after January 1st, 2010. Documents and an explanatory memo can be found at http://www.mls.lib.il.us/resource_sharing/reciprocal_borrowing.asp. Questions contact Kate Boyle at boylek@mls.lib.il.us.
A final reminder that School Library Members need to complete their School Per Capita (http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/what_we_do/schoolpercapgrant.html) and their MLS School Annual Report http://www.mls.lib.il.us/SchoolAnnualReport2010.asp by Friday November 20, 2009. One person from each district or private school needs to complete each survey in order to receive the grant money and retain system membership. Review and provide comments on the recently completed Core Services for Library Systems by the Library System Standards Committee, posted on the Illinois Library System Standards blog at http://illibrarysystemstandards.wordpress.com.
Core services are defined as basic services that are funded by the state's System Area & Per Capita Grant and provided by the multitype regional library systems to all full member libraries at no charge, and cover the following areas: Advocacy, Consulting, Delivery, On-Site Visits and Professional Development. Grants & Awards
Applications are open for the 2010 Penguin Young Readers Group Award which provides a $600 stipend to up to four children's librarians to attend their first ALA Annual Conference. Applicants must be personal members of ALSC and ALA, work with children in an elementary, middle school or public library, have less than ten years, but more than one year, of experience as a children's librarian by the opening of the Annual Conference and no previous attendance at an ALA Annual Conference.
